This October, Rec and Park and partners the San Francisco Environment Department, and Friends of Alemany Farm, held their annual Youth Urban Agriculture Day at Alemany Farm.
The event saw more than 180 San Francisco Unified School District third graders take over Alemany Farm, as they learned about the importance of agriculture and farming.
The day included several workshops that taught students things like butter making; painting with plant-based dyes; weaving; compost making; and food production. Participants also learned about nutrition, livestock, native pollinators and their role in producing food, and how to be good stewards of natural areas.
Students also got up close and personal with a variety of farm animals, including mini pigs, mini goats, a mini cow, several types of ducks and chickens, and honeybees. Now in its third year, Youth Ag Day provides San Francisco kids with the unique opportunity to be outdoors and engage in sustainable farming practices, aiming to inspire them to be excellent stewards of the land.
